Chastain Park Conservancy History The 2003 update to the Chastain Park Master Plan, and the City of Atlanta’s 2003 Comprehensive Development Plan, recommended the formation of the Chastain Park Conservancy. Chastain Park Civic Association board members, Penelope Malone, Justin Wiedeman, and Kirk Oppenlander, led a committee to launch the new conservancy.
The committee quickly merged with a grassroots organization called People for Chastain Park, headed by local residents J.P. Matzigkeit and Ray Mock. People for Chastain Park had been partnering with Park Pride to host volunteer events in the park for several years. Together in 2003 the team completed over 7000 volunteer hours in Chastain Park, in addition to founding the Conservancy and obtaining the 501 (c) (3) status in record time.
The Chastain Park Conservancy (CPC) was founded in the fall of 2003, with these board members: o Mary Dodson o J.P. Matzigkeit o Kirk Oppenlander o Justin Wiedeman
In its early stages, the Conservancy worked with Ray Mock and Park Pride to manage park operations; later in 2003, Ray became the Conservancy’s only employee and Director of Operations.
The Conservancy has a Memorandum of Understanding with the City of Atlanta Parks Department. Its mission is to restore, enhance, maintain and preserve Chastain Park, organizing volunteers and donations to compensate for shortfalls in the City parks budget. The CPC also works closely with the community, City departments, the nearest NPUs (A and B), and 11 different venue operators to make Chastain a world class park.
